Ice Fishing Tours

We can’t make it through the winter without fishing, so why not join us for a great winter experience? Try your luck with tip-ups and jigging for fish on some of Vermont’s most scenic lakes with our guided instructional ice fishing tours. Throughout the winter we target many different species of fish in many different bodies of water. These species include Northern Pike, Landlocked Salmon and Lake Trout. We will also pursue many other types of fish, including Brown and Rainbow Trout, Yellow Perch and many more. These will be targeted both by jigging and by the use of tip-ups. These trips are great for people who don’t even know what ice-fishing is, or for an experienced ice-fisherman who is visiting and doesn’t have any of their gear. This tour will consist of both tip-up fishing and jigging. We will show you our secret techniques to getting more fish on the ice both by jigging and use of tip-ups. We explain when to use which setup and when its best to use a combination of the two.

Are you thinking about picking up fly fishing, or has it just been a few years since your last cast? Either way, the FREE casting clinics offered here at The Fly Rod Shop will prepare you to get out on the river this fishing season. The class will start off inside the shop where you will learn about the different equipment, the flies, and the basic anatomy of a stream. Before long we will step outside onto The Fly Rod Shop pond and learn both the false cast, and the roll cast. As you are learning the needed techniques our experienced staff will be walking around the pond to help you learn to make the perfect cast. The class will also cover things such as shooting line, and how to still make great casts in tight spaces and even when there is wind. All gear is provided by The Fly Rod Shop or you are welcome to bring your own if you have it. The pond only fits about 10 people so call now to reserve your spot!

        There aren’t many places you can float a drift boat down a moving river and find big toothy pike in abundance. You can with us, join us for a full day float trip on one of Vermont’s best kept secrets. Quite frequently we will boat pike over 30″ and often we’ll see 40 plus inch fish chase our flies in. The big ones don’t always commit though! Expect to fish big flies on 8-10wts with sinking lines. Lost of casting at the bank then stripping hard back to the boat. Good casting and double hauls are extremely helpful when fishing like this. Primetime is the month of May and first part of June when water temps are low and water levels are a bit higher. Depending on conditions trips in July and August can be good as well. Fly Fishing Instructional and Guided Tours

Our most popular program here at The Fly Rod Shop is our instructional fly fishing tours. This program will start off here at the shop where you will be fitted for boots and waders if you don’t already have them, and beginners will have a short casting lesson on our trout pond to learn both the roll cast and false cast. One of our experienced guides will then take you to one of our many fishing spots where you will learn the techniques as you fish! Your guide will show you how and where to make the perfect cast, how to mend the line, how to get a great drift, and most importantly, where to find the fish! You will also be shown the different types of aquatic insects that can be found in the river and how to choose a fly that best matches what the fish want to eat. Depending on the fishing location you could possibly catch Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, and Smallmouth Bass. All of the gear will be provided by The Fly Rod Shop unless you wish to bring your own. These trips are available in both half days (4hrs) and full days (8hrs). Drift Boat Trips/River Pontoons

Join us on a scenic drift boat trip down Vermont’s Lamoille, Winooski or one of our other secret drift boat locations. During your float experience you can expect to target rainbow trout, brown trout, and an occasional brook trout on most of these river adventures. Our adventures are for the fly fisher, but these trips also can accommodate those interested in a great spin fishing experience. Our sixteen and a half foot long Hyde Drift Boats can accommodate one or two anglers per float. You’ll be accompanied by one of our experienced guides who can provide you with instruction and the hottest fly patterns or spin fishing lures to put you into the best chances of catching your lunker fish. Our drift boat trips begin in May and run through the end of October, however, water flow plays a critical role in this adventure. So July and August months are typically booked based on water conditions. If conditions do not permit a drift, for those still interested in a mid-summer experience, we have several small ponds and lakes within a short drive of the Fly Rod Shop to guarantee you an opportunity to still get out on the water. Mid-summer bass/pike fishing is one of our local best kept secrets. Don’t hesitate in booking this trip. We only run two boats per day so reservations fill up fast!

Junior Fishing Program

Teaching the fundamentals of “Having Fun Fishing.” One of the programs offered at The Fly Rod Shop for young anglers is the Junior Fishing Program. Parents, if your child enjoys fishing but it just isn’t your thing, or you are tired of doing all the work for them, by the end of this class the students will have the knowledge needed to fish for themselves! This 3 hour class includes time both in the classroom, and outside on The Fly Rod Shop pond. Inside, kids will learn the basics about spin fishing. Time will be spent going over must-know information such as fish identification, parts of the rod and hook, lures & bait, and how to stay safe while fishing. Also, kids will learn how to tie the fisherman’s knot (line to hook), the surgeons knot (line to line), how to put on a bobber, and how to bait their hook. Once stepping outside to the pond we will go over how to make the perfect cast, how basic lures work, and even find some of the food fish love to eat! Kids will be given nets and sent off around the small pond to capture all the aquatic insects and any other “fish food” they can find. After comparing what they find to the bait they can use kids will have a better understanding of what the fish want to eat. At the end of this class, everything they learned will be put to use as they are sent out to the pond to set up their own equipment and try to catch a rainbow or brook trout! This class is great for beginners or for those more experienced that want to perfect their skills. All the gear is provided or the kids are welcome to bring their own if they have it.

Lake Charters

Our latest new addition to our guiding fleet is our AlumaCraft Trophy 205 fishing machine! Our fully equipped fishing vessel is ideal for fly fishing, spin casting, or trolling away your morning, afternoon , or evening charter. Our guides will take you to one of Vermont’s pristine lakes within 45 minutes or less of the Fly Rod Shop. Our boat is captained by Joshua Adams and Bob Shannon Fly Rod Shop guides with a combined forty years of professional guiding experience to give you the best opportunity to tug on some of Vermont’s most enjoyed sport fish. Target species for these adventures include lake trout, salmon, small mouth bass, large mouth bass, pickerel, pike, or even a variety of pan fish for the young anglers in your fishing party.

Fall Foliage Scenic Boat Charters

If you’re looking for a unique fall foliage experience, this is the trip for you. One of our guides will motor you along the beautiful, serene Waterbury Reservoir. The Fall Foliage Scenic Boat charters have a lot to offer. The Waterbury Reservoir is settled between two mountain ranges offering extraordinary fall foliage views. The Waterbury Reservoir is 860 acres . It is approximately 5 miles long, providing plenty of beautiful shoreline. Along one shoreline is part of the Mount Mansfield State Forest that covers 12,912 acres of forest. The Waterbury Reservoir was one of four dams that were created in the 1930’s for flood control following the flood of 1928. Construction began in April of 1935 and the dam was complete in October 1938. The dam is an earth fill dam, meaning it is made of stone. Before any additions were made to the dam, it was the largest dam in the country in which all of the stones were placed by a human instead of excavators. While enjoying the unique views along the shoreline you will have many wildlife sighting opportunities. There are many Whitetail deer inhabiting the Mount Mansfield State forest along with the surrounding area. You may be lucky enough to see a deer drinking along the shoreline or better yet, one swimming across. There are also some moose around, last year we were even lucky enough to see a moose crossing the reservoir, which is a rare sight anywhere in the country. Along with both deer and moose you may even spot an elusive black bear gorging themselves on beech nuts and other food sources located on the shorelines. More often than not when we are on the reservoir, we are blessed by the appearance of the local Bald Eagle that lives upon the shoreline. Along with the Bald Eagle we may spot an Osprey, as there are multiple pairs that nest along the Reservoir. And if you get there on the right day you will probably see dozens of ducks. There are Mallards, many types of diving ducks and even the Beautiful uncommon Black Duck and Wood Duck, which are two of the most beautiful birds along the east coast.

The following morning we will meet, go over a few crucial knots and learn how to tie them then go fish again!                          The Fly Rod Shop is happy to offer our customers trip opportunities to The Sand Hill River lodge. It is a private lodge, and because of the lower angling pressure, sees prolific runs of Atlantic salmon. The trip includes flight to the lodge from Goose Bay Airport, lodging, meals, guides, and return flight to Goose Bay. The Sandhill River System is located 30 miles southeast of Cartwright, Labrador.  The Sandhill has a robust run of Atlantic salmon as well as brook trout and sea trout.  The Sandhill River Lodge is a remote fishing lodge located 4 miles from the Labrador Sea, supplying our fisherman with a continual supply of bright salmon.   The Lodge can accommodate 12 guests. We have comfortable semi-private rooms and outstanding meals. All of the comforts of home are provided in a truly wilderness setting.
