Yup, the new season started May 1st. As a FRS employee I was lucky enough to sit in on most of it. Most of my fishing experience has been with spin fishing, but I have to say, after listening to Bob’s unique way of weaving story and instruction, I am quite fascinated with the art of Fly Fishing.
The clinic started inside the shop with a very interesting, informative and entertaining short lecture on the aquatic science component of fly fishing. We learned how fish feed (sight, smell and vibration – it’s on the quiz!) and how to “match the hatch”. We also learned about how to attract fish to bite and we were directed to several good books if we were interested in furthering our knowledge. I now know that a river is made up of different levels called the bottom column, the mid column and the surface column and which one produces the most food. I also know what time of day is best to catch fish and I which types of flies to use for different seasons. If you want to know that answer you’ll have to come to the shop for one of the free clinics!
Once Bob has given you enough info to pique your interest, you are invited to some hands-on casting instruction out on the Fly Rod Shop’s pond. Here, once again, you’ll get expert instruction on the parts of the fly rod as well as casting technique. You’ll get to practice until your arm gets tired!
I highly recommend you take advantage of our Free Casting Clinics whether you have been fly fishing for years or trying it for the first time. There is always something to learn about this amazing and fun sport. Our clinics are held on Wednesdays from 4pm to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 10:30am. All equipment is provided by The Fly Rod Shop or you are welcome to bring your own. Advance registration required. Space is limited so book early and an adult must accompany children under the age of 14.
So give us a call at the shop at 802-253-7346 to make your reservation. Don’t let another great day of fishing go by before you give fly fishing a try!
