First and foremost we’d like to thank everyone who made it out to the Third Annual Vermont Fly Fishing Show. Vendors and patrons alike. We had a great turnout despite not great weather!! On another note the fishing has been quite good over the past few days. I’ve been on the Winooski a lot over the past three days and it has been treating me very well. Water temps are perfect, I fished the mid section of it yesterday from 9-1 and the water was 58 when I left! Not much for bugs hatching but the fish were receptive to Copper Johns, Ptails and Soft Hackles. Got two really nice wild bows right at the end too. One was pushing 20″ and the other wasn’t much smaller. The evening hatches have been impressive as well. Lots of Isos hatching along with White Flies, Cahils, BWOs and Caddis flies to name a few. We had a big flying ant hatch the other day as well, might have another with this warmer weather. Keep an eye out this week! During the ant hatch we found fish rising on the section of river we were fishing but for whatever reason could not get them to take an ant. The rises did seem pretty aggressive for ants and there were other bugs hatching so we switched it up to a #10 Parachute Adams to imitate the ISOs we saw flying around and we immediately started hooking fish. As the evening progressed more and more bugs came off but the rises seem to slow down tremendously after 6:30pm. We had our best action from about 4:30-5:45ish. We’re at the point in the year where there’s no need to hit the water at first light. Most of our trips are going out from 9-1 or 2-6 and they’ve been doing equally well. Get out over the next few days and fish, even if it’s only for an hour after work it’ll be worth it!
