Ever had a place you wanted to travel to go fishing? Or, is traveling to go fishing something you’ve never really thought about? Here at the shop, 2016 is shaping up to be a pretty awesome year for traveling with The Fly Rod Shop. We’re meeting up with some new lodges, some of which have never even hosted fly-fishing tours before, others in very unique places around the world.
One of the ones we’re most excited is the Wilderness North Lodge located in Ontario, Canada this Lodge is the perfect fly in fly fishing destination for trophy Northern Pike and Trophy Brook Trout. Clients will spend time at both the main Lodge and other outposts located on other bodies of water that will be accessed via float planes from the lodge.
Next in the line up is the Sandhill River Lodge. Located 30 miles Southeast of Cartwright, Labrador the Sandhill River boasts some of the best numbers of Atlantic Salmon and some of the best quality fish in the world. With the ability to accommodate no more than 8 people per slot, you will get an experience to remember. From outstanding Five-Star meals to the breathtaking scenery, wildlife and of course, screaming reels this trip will be a tough one to beat.
A little closer to home are the Steelhead fishing trips in Upstate New York along with the hosted trip at the South Holston River Lodge. Steelhead are a highly sought after fish on a fly rod and there’s not too many places in the world that can produce numbers and size of fish as the Salmon River located on the East side of Lake Ontario. This hard fighting fish start to show up in the river in mid October and remain in the river until mid May. We like to fish from mid October through late November and again in late March through early May. Our spots are starting to fill up so be sure to book your trip soon. On top of drift boat trips we are also offering Steelhead University again this spring an fall. Steelhead University is a 3-day program designed to teach you everything you need to know about these incredible fish. From setting up leaders, to locating fish in different types of water this program has got it covered. Located at The Tailwater Lodge, by far the finest lodge in the area this is a highly informative and educational program.
Located in Northeast Tennessee the South Holston River Lodge is a world premier lodge on a world premier river. The South Holston River is a tailwater that has some of the best trout fishing in North America and definitely on the Eastern side of the country. With over 5,000 fish per mile you will frequently find fish between 12 and 20” with fish hitting the two foot mark and higher not uncommon. With the lodge located directly on the river, you can wake up and fish before breakfast in one of the riffles or flats about 2 minutes from your private cabin. If you’ve got the winter blues, this is a trip for you, because it’s a tailwater, the fishing here is phenomenal throughout the year!
Now lets dip down a bit further south. Bob will be starting up his Bonaire Bonefishing trips in 2017 again after a little hiatus from saltwater guiding. After spending coutless winters wading and poling the flats for these ghost like fish he has got it dialed in! Aside from Bonnaire we also have a few other locations in the works right now. Parker is spending the winter in Southwest Costa Rica doing some reconnaissance primarily for Roosterfish and Snook. He’s been talking with a couple lodges and it looks like something might come together for early 2017! We can only hope!
Regardless of where you end up fly fishing this year, the only important thing is that you do. And if any of these trips strike an interest in you, check out our website or give the shop a call and talk dates with Speer!
