We hope everyones been able to get out over the past week! The fishing has improved, we’re having to work for fish but the fish we’re catching are looking happy and healthy. Water temps on both the Winooski and Lamoille have ranged from 58 degrees to 64 later on in the day. Nymphing and soft hackles have brought in the most fish in the am, while dry fly fishing in the afternoons have got a decent amount of fish. Water levels across the state are still incredibly low. No rain in the forecast is going to keep things difficult. Take advantage of the lower flows, go explore sections of the bigger rivers that are normally tricky, or impossible to wade.
As far as hatches go we’ve still been seeing some tricos in the am along with some random caddis. Afternoons have produced BWO hatches-particularly on the cloudier days along with some ISOs. Haven’t seen any prolific hatches of ISOs but there’s been enough around that the fish have been willing to eat a larger adams. Flying ants have still been around, the warmer days we had last week seemed to really get them out and about. Next week we have a few hotter days, it’d be safe to guess that we’ll see a few more epic ant hatches. We have been getting some calls on LL Salmon, there are a few fish around but with the water being so low the run hasn’t really began. Hopefully we get a big push of water soon, otherwise the run may never really materialize to what we always hope for.
The Lake fishing has continued to be decent as well. The largemouth are still shallow, in heavy weeds and willing to take a top water fly. The smallies are shallow early and late and will smack a popper. Mid day the smallies will work to slightly deeper offshore structure, think sharp ledgey drop offs, submerged structure, 15-30ft deep. Kinda tough to target them with a fly but if you have a heavy sinking line and a clouser minnow you will be in the game! Good luck to everyone getting out, be sure to do a rain dance! And don’t forget to swing by the shop this weekend for our Low Water Sale!!
On another note, we will be having a sale weekend September 12th, 13th and 14th. Be sure to mark your calendars! We’ll have some killer deals, along with some sweet giveaways. For more info click here!
