The fishing has been quite good over the past few days! The bigger rivers have continued to drop in water flow and are in pretty awesome shape right now. I got out on the Winooski on Tuesday and although some spots still had a little too much flow to be able to fish them well lots of other spots were great! Landed a pile of fish, a combination of both wild rainbows and stocked rainbows. It was probably close to 50:50 on wild to stocked which was nice to see. Even the smaller wild rainbows pull so hard it’s usually very obvious when you hook a wild vs a stocky. Got most of the fish nymphing with a few on streamers as well, the fly didn’t really seem to matter, just getting to the right depth. Saw a ton of Hendricksons hatching in the evening along with a decent amount of Caddis flies. Also saw some larger light colored mayflies; may have been cahills but didn’t look too close. I didn’t see any fish rise but that’s gonna change any day. Water temps have been in the low to mid 50s where we’ve been. The Winooski Tuesday afternoon was 54 and yesterday it was 56. The Lamoille was a touch cooler but still good!

The fishing should be fantastic over the next week. I would imagine the evening dry fly bite could be really productive in the next few days. As water temps continue to warm up the fishing may become more productive morning and evening but for now you can go get em pretty much any time of the day. Whatever you do make sure you get out this week and into the weekend. Even if it’s just for a few minutes one evening after work.
