The fishing has been great the past few days! We’ve been out fishing on a mix of waters lately, the stillwater fishing has been great, small stream brookies are looking up, the mid sized rivers and the big rivers have also been fishing well! We’ve been seeing a variety of bugs coming off the bigger rivers. Decent amounts of caddis have been flying around, some cahils and PMDs as well as a few yellow sallies. Most of the fish we’ve been getting on dries have not seemed to be overly fussy over the past few days, a few here and there but for the most part they’re eating whatever fly we drift over them! As water temps ticked up this week, a lot of the fish seemed to move into some of the swifter moving water, there’s still fish all over in most of the pools/runs but don’t be afraid to fish the thin water a the very top of the run. Great water to swing a soft hackle in! Water temps on the Winooski seemed to range from 59 to 64 degrees yesterday (AM) things should be a little cooler from here going forward but it’s still definitely worth bringing a thermometer with you. We’ve still been fishing throughout the day, and the fish seem to bite pretty well all day long. Finding fish on the big rivers feeding on top mid day may be less likely to occur but they’ll gladly eat a nymph! This should remain somewhat consistent over the next week as the air temps don’t seem to be getting too warm, and we’ll still being cooler temps at night. You may have to down size tippet mid day and perhaps go a little smaller with your fly but I wouldn’t overthink it. Some of the rivers came up a bit over night so if the main rivers have some color today it should clear up by tomorrow. And it shouldn’t be dirty enough to negatively effect the fishing! If anything, it may have made it better!
For those getting out today and tomorrow, the opportunities are endless. Go fish whatever you’d like! Conditions should be pretty great almost everywhere and the fishing should be good! Yard chores can wait until next week, or the week after. Go fish!
