We had a great few days of fishing towards the end of this past week! Both the Winooski and Lamoille fished quite well wednesday-Friday. The Winooski was more of a subsurface game from what we found, not many fish rising, decent bug activity but the water was still just high enough and a little off colored that it seemed to keep the fish down. Nymphing was super productive though, we got a good amount of fish on Pheasant Tails, frenchies, hare’s ears and some caddis imitations. The Lamoille was a little clearer, and seemed to provide more dry fly opportunities. There was a mix of bugs, we saw Caddis in a variety of sizes, a few Hendricksons, along with some Pale Evening Duns. Friday afternoon we found a few wild fish rising below morrisville, they gave us the middle fin when drifting caddis over them, but both rising fish took a Pale Evening Dun on the first drift. Nice to see some healthy, wild bows full of energy! Both of those fish were in the 13-15″ range and ripped a ton of line off our reels!

With the rain yesterday, pretty much every moving body of water is shot at the moment. Some of the smaller mountain streams will become fishable in the next 4-5 hours but that will likely be it for the day. A few of the mid sized tribs off the Winooski could be perfect this afternoon as well. Tomorrow should be a different story as water levels drop, some of the mid sized tribs will be fishable by tomorrow afternoon, streamers with a sink tip will likely be the most effective option for tomorrow. Tuesday and Wednesday should be great days to be on the mid sized tribs as well! It looks like we’ve got some more rain in the forecast for thursday-saturday which may keep the main rivers a little on the high side to fish. Hopefully they’ll drop in time for us to fish tuesday pm/wednesday but it’s hard to tell at this point how quickly the Winooski and Lamoille will drop. If conditions start to change this week we’ll be sure to update the river report again. Good luck on the water!
