The fishing has been decent this week. Water flows were up a bit from the rain we got towards the end of last week but things are starting to settle back down. The Winooski still has some color, but it’s fishable, the Lamoille is in great shape as are most of the mid sized tribs! We ran into some rising fish this week, not a ton but they’re around. Caddis, some Hendricksons and a few March Browns are what we saw the most of. There were a few cahils and pale evening duns flying around as well but not a noteable amount. The fish didn’t seem too particular on which dry they wanted to eat. If we saw a rising fish, and were able to drift a fly over it, it ate it. The next few weeks we should run into similar conditions with more and more fish feeding on the surface. Aside from dries, we picked up fish on the usual streamers and nymphs, as well as swinging some soft hackles! Always a ton of fun catching fish swinging soft hackles just below the surface.
The conditions may be a bit more variable this weekend, it looks like we’re going to get a decent amount of rain over the next 24 hours. Not enough to blow everything out, but enough that the main winooski may mud up a bit too much to fish. Hard to say yet, but if you are getting out this weekend, be sure to keep that in mind. Most of the smaller to mid sized tribs should remain in pretty good shape, could be prime streamer conditions tomorrow am. The Lamoille may remain fishable, just higher and a little dirty-that’s our hope anyway. It always takes a bit more rain to blow out the Lamoille than the Winooski.
Good luck to everyone hitting the water over the next few days!
