The fishing over the past week continued to pick up. We started seeing more bugs, and more rising fish on the big rivers. Still running into a mix of stockies and wild fish, happy to see the wild fish we are given last summers drought. The heavy rain the other night brough the big rivers up quite a bit in flow. And the last few hot days brought water temps up quite a bit. Temps on the main river are going to be 70 plus degrees today and tomorrow. Even first thing in the AM, you probably won’t find good temps unless you head way upstream on them. The mid sized and smaller stuff should all be good, but it’s definitely worth bringing a thermometer out this weekend. We just got an order of the fishpond digital thermometers in yesterday! Next week is looking excellent, the water temps should drop quite a bit, looks like we’ll be getting some degree of rain most days which we’ll gladly take. If the big rivers don’t blow out, the fishing should be great on both the Winooski and Lamoille.
We’ve started to venture up into some of the brook trout streams over the past few days and have had some great action on the high mountain streams. Lots of very healthy looking brook trout! All of which we’re willing to eat a Swisher’s PMX along with just about any other dry! Bass fishing has also been pretty good, the smallies are mostly done spawning, the males are still on the beds but the bigger females have started to head back towards slightly deeper water. For the stillwater fishing, focus on edges/drop offs near rocky points, and gravel bars (where the bass like to spawn) the bigger bass won’t be too far off the beds right now but they’ll be on the prowl now that they’re done spawning. Poppers will work early and late, clousers, buggers, zonkers and jig streamers should get the job done the rest of the day.
For those getting out this weekend, go explore a mountain brookie stream or hit one of the mid sized tribs first thing in the am! Or, knock the cobwebs off your canoe and go for a paddle on one of the great bass lakes we have in the area!!
Good luck out there!
