The last week things have remained pretty similar. Low, warm water on the mid sized and bigger rivers. The brook trout fishing has remained pretty good, water temps on the small streams we’ve been on have ranged from 56 to 62 degrees. The few little shots of rain we got this week helped keep those flows up a little bit. If the forecast doesn’t deviate too much over the next few days we should see water levels come up, and water temps cool off.
Most of our time lately has been spent bass fishing. The Largemouth fishing has been good on a few lakers around. We’ve been focusing on the edges, and small open pockets in and around the heavy weeds. Even with a good weedless popper, it’s hard to fish the really dense vegetation. The bass have been very willing to eat a popper, or unweighted streamer fished right on the edge though. We had some very big bass give us some awesome explosions the other evening on a d & d fished a few inches below the surface! River bass fishing has been productive as well. Poppers, and bigger foam hoppers have worked well in the morning until fog has lifted then we’ve been dead drifting bigger stonefly nymphs along with twitching streamers on a sink tip. Zonkers, muddlers, buggers, and clousers have all been working.
Over the weekend, a few of the mid sized tribs may become fishable, but that will be contingent on what we actually get rain wise. Air temps are supposed to continue to drop over the next 3-4 days and next week is actually looking quite pleasant temp wise. For those getting out this weekend, bass would be the most logical move. There’s plenty of good bass water on both the Winooski and Lamoille. Or, take a canoe out and go hit one of the numerous ponds around and go for bass or pickeral! They’re a ton of fun to catch on a fly! Brook trout fishing would be another good option, especially if we do get some rain. Be sure to temp the brook trout streams but most of them in the higher elevations should be good to fish.
