Tons of rain came through most of the state last night and into this morning. We definitely needed it! It’ll make things a little tricky for today and tomorrow but should set us up for another good week of fishing next week! The bigger rivers will be in pretty rough shape through the weekend, high and off colored. A lot of the small to mid sized tribs should be in good shape by this evening though so don’t get too discouraged! Now’s the time to go into some of the tribs off the main river and strip some streamers for some big trout!! Be prepared to run into a lot of leaves over the next few days, for those tying flies, sometime adding a weedguard to your fall streamers is a good way to eliminate some of the leaves getting fouled up on your hook! This is often the best time of the year to run into your biggest fish of the season, especially in water conditions like we’ll have this weekend! If you can find a tea colored stream this afternoon or tomorrow bust out the sink tip, cover some water and get ready to hook a big one!! Rivers like the Dog, Mad, Gihon, and North Branch would all be worth checking out assuming the water levels drop enough, that won’t be something we’ll know until it happens but those are often streams that will produce some big fish in the right conditions. Lots of the smaller tribs of the Winooski and Lamoille will also have big fish in them so don’t overlook the brook trout sized streams!

Another good option for the weekend would be heading up north to target landlocks, the river will be busy but this push of water should spread the fish out and get them a little more fired up. Streamers early in the AM then smaller nymphs seem to be working for Land Locked Salmon. Good luck to everyone getting out this weekend! Have a few plans in case one of the streams you planned on hitting isn’t fishable and get after it!!
