The fishing has improved over the past week. We certainly still need some rain, but conditions could be far worse than they are. In the past few days we’ve started seeing good numbers of ISOs coming off. Water temp permitting, that can be a great hatch to fish, especially on the Winooski. We’ve been seeing water temps vary from 60-68 on the big rivers in the past week. The warmer more humid nights have kept the water temps from cooling off, but the nights the temps have dropped, and days that have remained cloudy have provided cool water temps on the bigger rivers. Water levels are still incredibly low, but the fish still seem to be in all the usual spots. Focus on the faster riffly water, depth doesn’t seem to be much of a concern. Take advantage of the low water and go do some exploring, a lot of spots that are typically a huge pain to get in and out of are now much easier to access.
For those getting out over the next few days, be sure to bring your thermometer, but you should have some good opportunities to get onto the bigger bodies of water. Cover water quickly, when you start finding fish, be more thorough as they seem to be in specific spots, not as spread out as they are in the spring-which makes perfect sense given the low water. The charge of water we got last night brought water flows up a lot on the smaller tribs so going brookie fishing today or tomorrow could be a great option. The big rivers haven’t come up much, you may find off colored water today and tomorrow on the big rivers but it should clear up pretty quick.
