This heat wave has definitely taken it’s toll on a lot of the trout streams around. Over the past few days we’ve gotten reports of the Winooski in the high 70s in Bolton, pushing 80 up towards Montpellier with the Lamoille in a very similar range. Talked to several people who had found dead trout in these rivers as well as some smaller sized tributaries. Hopefully we didn’t lose a lot of fish, we’ll find out at some point… Even some of the brook trout streams were exceeding 70, we were able to get on some over the past few days that were still low 60s and they fished quite well but they were still definitely spooky. The rain we got last night and this morning will help but we could definitely use some more, we’ll be seeing slightly cooler day time temps with some nights getting down into the 50’s which will also help.
Wouldn’t be a bad idea to stick to hit the stillwater this weekend and reduce stress on the trout that are barely hanging in there. There’s some spots around you could trout fish but even where the temps are going to be adequate it’s going to be tough. The lower sections of both the WInooski and Lamoille would be decent bets if you’re looking to get after some river bass. All of the local lakes will be fishing decent this weekend. The Hex hatch has been pretty sporadic over the past week, heard of a few good reports but most of the anglers we have talked to have see a few here and there with a couple fish rising but just not what they were really hoping for. Maybe with the slightly cooler weather we’re going to see the Hex hatch will improve. Good luck if you get out this weekend, if you’re going to target trout, not that it’s a very lucrative option be sure to bring a thermometer with you. Good luck to everyone getting out this weekend! Go fish for some BASS!!
