Finally saw the first good hatch of flying ants last night in Stowe! We may not see anymore for a few days with the weather being a little unsettled but thats ok!! We need the rain. The trout fishing has been somewhat limited lately, mostly the smaller streams which are low but still fishing quite well. It looks like we may get some much needed rain this afternoon into tomorrow, it won’t be enough but we’ll take it! The brook trout have been eating the usual flies. Anything that floats and you can see… We like #14 blond wulfs, micro chubbies and hopper patterns. Easy to see flies that the fish like. The purple micro chubbies have been crushing it lately! Be sure to have a stealthy approach, long casts and stay out of the water! The bass fishing has remained solid over the past week, plenty of fish on poppers and a good amount on streamers! Nothing huge but they’ll still bend a rod nicely!

Over the next few days keep an eye out for ants, the ones we saw last night were all cinnamon, this is a hatch everyone should fish, The biggest problem is most of the larger trout rivers are a bit too warm to fish this hatch. Sometimes we’ll go down to the lower Winooski or Lamoille and target bass and fallfish. It’s a pretty awesome sight, just about every fish in the river will feed on these flies. Lake and ponds can also provide great dry fly fishing during an ant hatch. Bass will gorge themselves on ants along with just about every other fish in the lake. If trout are what you’ll be targeting focus on the small streams as that’s where you’ll find the best water temps.

On another note, be sure to mark your calendars for the Post Pandemic Sale on September 9th, 10th and 11th. There’s going to be tons of stuff on sale with tons of giveaways!
