It should be a great weekend to be on the rivers! The rain we got two days ago brought water levels up quite a bit and made things a bit tricky yesterday but water levels are on the drop throughout the state and it’s shaping up to be a great weekend. Over the past week we’ve continued to primarily focus on the smaller mtn streams but we did manage a few mornings on the Lamoille above Morrisville in between rain storms and found good water temps, good clarity and lots of hungry fish! The mid sized tribs also fished fairly well and we ran into a good mix of wild and stocked fish which is always encouraging to see this time of the year.

Over the last week or so we’ve seen a couple of awesome flying ant hatches, there was a small one last night-wouldn’t be surprised if we see a more prolific hatch in the next couple of evenings. We’ve also seen some ISOs, BWOs and a few white flies coming off. The ISOs should continue to pick up over the next couple of weeks, same with the BWOs. Hoppers are still worth fishing as well and will be a good dry to keep in your box for at least the next month.

Over the next couple of days, plan on doing a little nymphing, a little dry fly fishing and a little streamer fishing. Water colors and levels will dictate which works the best but that’s going to vary quite a bit from one water shed to the other. If the flows are higher and the water is still on the dirty side, streamers and big heavy nymphs will be best. In lower flows ands clearer water a mix of dries and nymphs should both land fish.

For those getting out overt the next few days there’s a good amount of options out there. If you’re looking to get on the bigger rivers the Lamoille would be the better option for the next couple of days. The Winooski is still a little on the dirtier side but should mellow out soon. The Lamoille above morrisville is in pretty good shape and the temps are in the lower 60’s. The next week is looking pretty good temp wise, it’s still worth temping the water but you should be good. The PM temps may get up there but with the higher flows they may not. All of the smaller mtn streams will be fantastic as well as the mid sized rivers!

Good luck to everyone getting out over the next few days!
