Looks like fall is here to stay this time. Fishing has been pretty good for us over the past couple of days, a few outings that have been a little inconsistent but we’ve been getting into fish on every trip. A combination of both dry flies and nymphs have taken fish lately. Smaller Adams and BWO patterns on top and a variety of nymphs including Pheasant Tails, Bird of Prey, Copper Johns (Red) and Iron Sally’s are all on the list right now. Because the water levels are sooo low right now finding the fish hasn’t been hard. Pocket water and holes that still have a decent flow to them have been where we’ve found the most fish. Some small pockets have given up 2-4 fish over the course of a dozen casts! The Winooski has been lingering around 60 degrees over the past few days which is great! Still been seeing BWOs, haven’t seen any October Caddis yet personally but I am sure they’re out there. These are a much larger Caddis than others that hatch in VT ranging in sizes from #8-12. Lots of the smaller streams around are practically void of water. Give the brooks a break and hit the bigger rivers now that the water temps are good! Because of the low clear water 6x tippet may not be a bad idea on some of the smaller flies, fluorocarbon is also a good option when water levels are low and clear!  It looks like we’re going to receive some rain next week which is much needed! Hopefully it’ll get some migratory Salmon and Steelhead in VT up into tributaries that are currently bone dry or close to it. Good luck to everyone getting out!
