What a heat wave! The fishing has picked up quite a bit over the past five or six days. Water temps on the bigger rivers have warmed up quite a bit, the larger rivers are in the high 50s and low 60s. We’ve been seeing bugs coming off mid day into the evening and have seen fish feeding on them in certain spots. The dry fly eaters have seemed to be more towards the tailouts of the pool. We’ve been doing well nymphing and swinging soft hackles at the heads of the runs. We’ve been running into a mix of stocked and wild fish. The wild fish have been in the upper end of the runs in the faster water and the stockies have been hanging out in the slower, deeper water.

The water is currently pretty damn low for this time of the year, with that being said it looks like we’re going to get a decent amount of rain between sunday and tuesday. Cooler temps following the rain should drop the water temps a bit to a better temp. Next week should be fantastic on the bigger rivers assuming the rivers don’t come up too much!

For those getting out over the next few days enjoy it! The bigger rivers should remain fishable, if you’re out tomorrow PM it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take a temp to ensure the temps are cool enough. If you move around a bit you should be able to find some fish feeding on dries. If it’s not happening with dries, nymphing will be quite productive. We should continue to see Hendricksons for another week or two, they’ll be sporadic but the fish will still be receptive to a #10-12 Parachute Adams.
