Conditions have improved quite a bit over the past few days. Water levels have dropped and both the Winooski and Lamoille are at great levels, and water temps are between 55 and 61 degrees! We’re starting to see a few more bugs flying around, and have started seeing some fish rising. The next few evenings could be great! It does look like we’re in for some rain this weekend which hopefully won’t mess the big rivers up too much. We’ve still been catching most of our fish on nymphs along with some smaller streamers but have picked up a few fish on Caddis and Parachute Adams. Sean hit a riffle on the Winooski the other day and they picked up half a dozen wild bows swinging soft hackles. The smaller brook trout streams are turning on, fish are eating dries most days, the brookies are looking happy and healthy which is always a good sign! The mid sized tribs are also fishing well, some hatches here and there, and fish willing to eat nymphs throughout the day. As far as hatches go, we’ve mostly been seeing caddis, a handful of hendricksons around along with some Pale Evening Duns. If you’re venturing to the Lamoille in the next few evenings it’ll be worth having a few drakes in your dry fly box as well. Those should be coming off in the next week or so.
For those getting out over the next few days, there’s plenty of options out there. Both the Winooski and Lamoille will be in good shape between now and Saturday AM, take advantage of the good flows and temps! Be sure to be prepared to fish streamers, nymphs and dries as anything could happen with the current conditions.
Good luck to everyone getting out over the next few days!
