We’ve had a pretty good week of fishing in spite of the warm weather. Most of our fishing has been done on the smaller streams for brookies which has been quite productive. We did spend a little time earlier in the week on some of the mid sized tribs before they got too warm and did pretty well on trout. By Wednesday the am temps were a bit too warm to go for trout.

We’ve also been getting out for bass quite a bit lately. Lots of action throwing poppers on the edge of heavy weed beds for largemouth! We’ve also run into some feisty pike and pickeral to make for some exciting evenings on the water! The Hex hatch has still been strong on a lot of the lakes in the area so it’s not too late to get in on that!! We’ve got some rain in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, which we could use. It should bring a lot of the small mountain streams up to an optimal flow for the weekend! The fish in the small streams have been looking great! Very plump, they’ve been loving the higher flows we’ve had for most of the spring.

For those getting out this weekend you’ll have a few options, small streams and lake fishing will be your best bets but there should be some opportunities for early AM trout fishing on the mid sized streams, just be sure to bring a thermometer. Alternatively, both the Winooski and Lamoille have great populations of smallmouth that behave very similarly to trout, they just fight harder! On the Winooski you’ll find the best numbers from Richmond down stream, and on the Lamoille focus on water from fairfax down to lake Arrowhead, although there’s some great fishing from arrowhead down stream as well! Good luck to everyone getting out this weekend!
